Makassar has been long written in Indonesian history. The area that is now Makassar used to be the heart of the last biggest Indonesian Kingdom before independence-- Gowa.
Fort Rotterdam, named after Benteng Panyua, is one proof of the grandiose of Gowa Kingdom. It is just one out of 12 forts that belonged to Gowa Kingdom. The rest are ruined after the 7 years war against Dutch occupation (1660 - 1667). Fort Rotterdam is now a museum and cultural center.
The program includes a visit to:
- Fort Rotterdam: The original name of the fort was Benteng Panyua; Benteng means fort while Panyua means turtle since the fort is built in the shape of a turtle to reflect the power of the Gowa Kingdom who controlled both land and water territory. Fort Rotterdam was the name given by Dutch during the colonial era after a 7 year war to conquer Gowa (Makassar Kingdom).
