Toraja Highlight

Toraja is one of the very unique civilizations in the world. Its house architecture-- built in boat shapes and decorated with colorful wood engravings-- depicts the philosophy of Toraja.

Aluk Todolo, the hundred-year old Toraja teachings rule the life of Toraja in all its aspects although most of Torajanese are now Christians. During your stay you will visit traditional villages, witness how the Toraja respect their ancestors and you may even attend colorful mortuary rituals or traditional house inauguration ceremonies.

Day 01  Makassar - Toraja

Drive the whole day through a sceanic road passing coastal areas with rice fields, fishpond and Bugis village along the coastal area until reach Pare - pare area for lunch. Afternoon start entering the highlands through Enrekang with some photo stops provided en route. Arrive late afternoon in Toraja. The drive to Toraja takes about 8 to 9 hours

Day 02 Whole day Toraja exploration

Explore Toraja Land by visiting the highlights of the destination such as Lemo - a place where the wooden effigies representing the ancestors are on display high up on the rock cliff with tombs dug on the rock like chambers. Ke'te Kesu is a beautiful Toraja village with traditional houses and wood carvings. Ancient wooden sarcophagus can be seen next to the village. Ceremonies and the weekly market have to be taken into priority to be included on your program as attending such activities allows you to learn more about the Toraja civiization. Your guide will give you advice on what can be done in the day.

Day 03 Toraja - Makassar

Early morning return to Makassar and drive the same way back. You may visit some more interesting places if your flight departs at the early evening or if you still stay another night in Makassar.



Participant guidelines

  • Provide yourself with black costume in case there are funeral ceremonies to attend during your Toraja visit.
  • Dress light and proper
  • Bring along a jacket or pullover for high altitude places during your stay in Batutumonga
  • Rubber shoes or flat footwear is advised for short treks and visit villages.

Other disclosures

It is polite to bring something when you attend cultural rituals, whether it be a funeral ceremony or new house inauguration ceremony. You will attend as part of the society and not as onlookers. Your guide will advise what is worth bringing along.

The tour program in Toraja may change to adjust with any cultural events in Toraja. But the stay in Batutumonga is fixed because of the room availability concern.
